Thank you for sharing your submission to the Boldly Go Campaign. The Boldly Go Campaign reached its exciting finale in January 2023 with the launch of 10 satellites–each engraved with artwork and Gene Roddenberry quotes that reflect fansubmissions to the campaign–into space The satellites, made by our friends at Planet Labs and carried into orbit aboard a SpaceX rocket, will take high-definition photos of the Earth to help researchers better understand our planet.
Sending these satellites into the final frontier was the perfect way to cap off the Boldly Go campaign, which the Roddenberry Foundation began in 2021 to celebrate the legacy of Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry. To honor Gene’s hopeful vision for humanity’s future in what would have been his centennial year, the campaign invited Star Trek fans around the world to share what gives them hope for the next century.
We received over 1,500 submissions from more than 20 countries. We’re proud to have brought so many fans together around the values of diversity, inclusivity, and cooperation that Gene put at the heart of Star Trek. Now, we’re looking back at the highlights from the campaign.
Boldly Go began on September 8–Star Trek Day–with the campaign interviewing iconic Star Trek actors about what gives them hope. George Takei, Tim Russ, Isa Briones and many more shared why they’re optimistic for our future, often drawing inspiration from their loved ones.
In the following months, we asked fans to share their hopes in new and exciting ways. Our Captains’ Contest invited fans to sound off on social media about which Star Trek captain inspires them the most. We were blown away by the creativity and thoughtfulness of fan submissions. Check out Leen Isabel’s painting of Captain Philippa Georgiou for one stunning example.
The goal of the Boldly Go campaign wasn’t just to collect hopeful visions for the future, but also to help make them a reality. With our Young Changemakers Contest, we invited young people to share submissions with the campaign showing they’re working to create a better future. We awarded $500 each to five participants to support their work, including Aweko Faith, a young entrepreneur in Uganda whose business reduces plastic waste by transforming it into art.
We hope you’ll join us in looking back at the hundreds of submissions that inspired us during the campaign. Check out our website for additional highlights, and see if you can find your submission in our mosaic.
Thank you to everyone who submitted to Boldly Go, and special thanks to our partners at Planet Labs, Paramount+, OTOY, CBS, and the Skirball Cultural Center. We hope the Boldly Go Campaign inspired you as much as it inspired us!
